Lung metastases

Lung metastases – understanding treatment options

Lung metastases are deposits from a tumour that originally developed elsewhere in the body. They must therefore be distinguished from primary lung cancer.

Medically and editorially updated: 01 September 2026 · General information, not an individual treatment decision.

Lung metastasis or lung cancer?

This distinction is central to treatment. Pathology, imaging and the known tumour history help determine the origin.

Local procedures

For a single or a small number of lesions, local procedures such as surgery or radiotherapy may be considered in selected situations. Suitability depends strongly on the overall findings.

Systemic therapy

In systemic disease, drug treatment is guided by the primary tumour, its biomarkers and the therapies already used.

Immuno-oncology

Approved immunotherapies may be relevant for certain primary tumours even in the metastatic setting. An individual oncological assessment is required.

Important: This information does not replace medical diagnosis or treatment decisions. If you develop new or worsening symptoms, acute problems or rapid deterioration, please contact your treating medical team immediately.

Have your records reviewed in context

For structured orientation, existing findings, histology, current imaging, previous treatments and – where available – molecular results can be brought together. This can help identify which questions should be clarified with the treating oncologist and which additional immuno-oncology information may be relevant.
