What are metastases?
Metastases develop when tumour cells detach from the primary tumour and form new tumour sites in other tissues or organs. They are generally named after the original cancer – for example, liver metastases from colorectal cancer remain biologically colorectal cancer cells.
Which information matters now
Current imaging, histology, extent of disease, symptoms, organ function, previous treatment and – depending on the tumour – molecular markers are considered together for treatment planning.
Which treatments may be possible
Depending on the situation, systemic treatments such as chemotherapy, hormone therapy, targeted medicines or approved immunotherapy, as well as local procedures such as surgery or radiotherapy, may be considered. Clinical trials may also be relevant.
Immunotherapy for metastatic cancer
Metastatic disease alone does not determine whether immunotherapy is suitable. Tumour type, biomarkers, previous treatment and individual risks are crucial.
